Besides the singer, this song was written by Jordan Minton and one of Brett’s regular collaborators, Jimmy Robbins. The producers of the track are Jimmy Harnen and Dann Huff. And its music video features actual footage from Brett’s marriage to his wife, Taylor (née Mills), whom he wed in 2018.

The Lyrics of “Dance With You”

That last fact is significant to point out because as explained by Young, the lyrics of “Dance with You” were inspired by his relationship with Taylor and more specifically their actual wedding. The title, as presented in the chorus, is based on the metaphor of life itself being “a dance”.

So what Brett is asserting is that if such is actually true, then the “only” person he “wanna dance with” is the addressee, i.e. his significant other. Or put more simply, he wants to spend his life with her.

So with that in mind, what the verses basically go about illustrating is the vocalist’s willingness to remain by the addressee’s side no matter what. And the bridge implies that Brett understands that our time here on Earth is finite. Therefore he wants to spend his days with someone special which, once again, would be his sweetheart.

“Just pick out a song I can hold you to
Go on, let down your hair, baby, kick off your shoes
They say, ‘Life’s a dance,’ and if that’s the truth
I only wanna dance with you”
