“Con La Brisa” by Foudeqush & Ludwig Göransson

“Con La Brisa” translates to “with the breeze”. The song has accomplished Swedish behind-the-scenes’ musician Ludwig Göransson teaming up for the first time with Foudeqush, a singer from Mexico. This collaboration was brought about with the backing of Marvel Music and Hollywood Records for a specific purpose, in a manner of speaking.

This is a very-poetic outing. Owing to this, it can be interpreted, theoretically, in a number of different ways. But the thing with “Con La Brisa” is that it has a backing narrative, so to speak. That is to say that this song belongs to the soundtrack of the fantasy-superhero film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022).

The primary artist behind the said soundtrack project is the aforenoted Göransson. He produced and co-wrote “Con La Brisa” (alongside Foudeqush). On top of that he is credited as a headliner of the track. Therefore, the logical conclusion would be along the lines of this song being created specifically for Wakanda Forever. However, as of this writing, that notion has not been verified as a fact.

That said, even if you do take “Co La Brisa” as being a plot device in the film, still its overall meaning is apparently open to interpretation. It is featured during a particular part of the story which possesses what can be gleaned as a romantic undertone. But the lyrics can also be interpreted as speaking to another part of the movie not directly associated with that scene per se.

OFF INTO THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

In order to explain the above argument, we now have to venture into the plot of the flick itself. There are a few spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen the film. To reiterate, this is a fantasy, comic book-based movie we’re dealing with here, so please bear with us.

First of all, it should be stated that the fictional Black Panther series is set primarily in Africa. But despite this, the lyrics of “Con La Brisa” are entirely in Spanish. There is a reason for this. The reason is because this particular installment of Black Panther co-stars another group of people, known as the Talokan. The Talokan people live underwater but originated from what is now known as Mexico. 

In fact their name is apparently derived from an actual word, Tlālōcān, utilized by the Aztecs, i.e. the indigenous people of Mexico. The Talokan trace their ancestry back to the Aztecs. And to note, since they have become isolated from the rest of the world, they still utilize such a language to date, including within the film itself.

But of course you can’t put a song rendered in Aztec on a major soundtrack being marketed to the West. So Marvel and co. went with Spanish, the language of the real-life conquerors of Latin America. Also, in Wakanda Forever, the Spanish forced the Talokan into the sea during the days of European expansion/colonialism. 

Spanish of course is the main language that has been spoken in the area since. Furthermore, this language has also become increasingly-marketable in the international music industry. So all of the above would logically explain why this track has a Spanish-speaking Mexican vocalist.

SCENE IN WHICH “CON LA BRISA” APPEARS

The scene in which this song is featured has Namor, the king of the Talocan, giving Shuri, the queen of Wakanda, a tour of his exquisite underwater homeland. 

There is a spoiler forthcoming, in that the two of them do not proceed to become a romantic item. But at this particular juncture in the film, the viewer wouldn’t know that yet. And why? Because there at least appears to be the potential of the two royals hooking up.

There is a reason all of that is important. And that is because these lyrics do in part appear to revolve around the vocalist comparing his fascination with the addressee to the natural beauty of their surroundings. She is basically promising to show this person – her “love”, as indicated in the pre-chorus – a whole new world. 

The overall sentiment revolves around the vocalist being totally enthralled with the addressee. She is so fascinated by him that she wants them to tour so that she can introduce him to beautiful localities.

As noted earlier, the scene in which this tune plays does indeed have Namor introducing Shuri to the splendor of his underwater kingdom.

THEORY 2

But all because the term “my love” is used in the pre-chorus does not automatically connote that the addressee is a romantic interest. This is even more important when taking the entirety of Wakanda Forever into consideration. 

There has been another reasonable point put forth to support the above idea. This point argues that the lyrics are rather being relayed from the perspective of Princess Fen, Namor’s mother. And here’s yet another spoiler! One of the subplots surrounding the character of Princess Fen is her unquenchable desire to show her son, Namor, the surface world in his youth. 

As expressed in the pre-chorus for instance, this vocalist likewise wishes to “show” the addressee “the entire sky”. And of course if you’ve been living underwater your whole life, as Namor did earlier on, you would have never seen the sky before.

LONG AND SHORT OF “CON LA BRISA”

In all, based on the scene over which “Con La Brisa” is actually played, the safer conclusion is this piece was composed as a love song.

Unfortunately for the romantics out there – and this is our third and final spoiler – there really isn’t much romance going on in Wakanda Forever. The closest we really get to one is once again the earlier interactions between Namor and Shuri. 

Within that overall context – of the former taking the latter to view his exotic homeland while concurrently, we can speculate, being smitten by her – these lyrics do make more specific sense. But outside of the narrative, they read more like a general love song. It sounds like one of those types of love songs in which the vocalist wants to run away with the addressee.
