“Daisies” by Katy Perry

The title of this song is based on a popular idiom, which you’ve likely heard before, that reads pushing up daises. This metaphor alludes to the concept of death. Basically if someone is ‘covered in daisies’, as Katy Perry words the phrase, that means that he/she is dead, as in being buried and beneath the earth.

So with that being established, now we can get to the true meaning of this tune. “Daisies” is actually an inspirational song relayed from a first-person perspective. And the way the story reads is that Perry is one of those individuals who has a big, unique dream. In fact it is so grand that the people around her don’t take it seriously. That’s another way of saying that they do not believe that she can actually achieve it. And while it is obvious that their discouraging words have an effect on her, ultimately what she is here to say is that she will not be deterred from pursuing what she perceives as her destiny. Indeed she asserts that she won’t let these individuals change her until she is ‘covered in daisies’. Or a more-pointed way of describing her disposition is that only death itself can stop her from pursuing her dreams.

Conclusion

So conclusively, this track reads as an ode to resilience. And it doesn’t fall into the positivity-thinking category as much as it implicitly embraces the concepts of persistence, perseverance and a focused, unalterable vision for one’s life.

For some reason I thought I heard somewhere that the song daisy was about the daughter she was about to have, however the only way I keep up anymore is by watching ET! I’m not quite young and not quite old! Love the song!
