“Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)” by Omar Apollo

Omar Apollo’s “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)” is pretty much a standard song of heartbreak. The song’s title is meant to signify, most simply explained, the vocalist freshly remaining in his feelings concerning the way his ex mistreated him.

What does make this piece different from the norm though is said ex, the addressee, likewise being a male. And the third party who seems to have compelled him to leave or stay away from the vocalist is a female.

So it’s as if the addressee is bisexual. And whereas it is never specified whether Omar is also or just straight-up gay, what is being effectively relayed, once again, are his lingering romantic feelings for this person he’s singing to/about. And this is despite the fact that, by the looks of things, the addressee didn’t treat Apollo particularly well when they were together.

This track was released on 8th April, 2022. It was the sixth and last single from Apollo’s first album, “Ivory”.

The album shares the same release date as “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)”.

Apollo worked with Manuel Barajas to write and produce “Evergreen”. Record producer Teo Halm also acted as an additional producer of “Evergreen”.

Did “Evergreen” chart?

Yes. It enjoyed moderate chart success globally. All in all, it performed best in Netherland (where it reached a peak position of 4 in the country’s official singles charts). It was a top-40 hit in the United Kingdom. It also managed to appear on the United States’ most important singles charts (the Hot 100).

Is “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)” about Frank Ocean?

Apollo and Frank Ocean are rumored to have once been in a romantic relationship. These rumors began spreading after it was noticed that both artists posted images of their trip to Italy at the same times and at the same locations. In addition to that, popular podcast host Fran Tirado revealed that one of his friends (who’s also a friend of Apollo) told him that both Apollo and Ocean dated for roughly three years before going their separate ways.

If it is true that Apollo and Ocean were actually once in a relationship, then it would be very surprising to find out that “Evergreen” isn’t about Ocean. But would we ever get to know the truth? Of course, we may never truly get to the bottom of this as both Apollo and Ocean are known to be very private people.

Stories from Fans

This heart-breaking song has motivated fans to share their very personal stories with others.

One story in particular is from a fan whose wife cheated on him countless times over the course of their relationship. When confronted, she continuously denied it until he couldn’t take it anymore. Despite loving her, he had to leave her, which was one of the hardest things he’s ever done. He continues to say he knows he’ll move on, but this has resulted in him not wanting to trust anyone anymore as it isn’t worth it.

Another fan also shared her story with us. To her, she can relate totally with Apollo because she has walked through his shoes before. She understands the feeling of craving for a toxic person, despite the destruction they cause.
