“Flowers” by Lauren Spencer-Smith

“Flowers” is a narrative which features a number of elements commonly found in young-female heartbreak songs. For instance, we have a vocalist more or less lambasting an ex for putting her under the impression that he was serious, even though he wasn’t. Indeed, the addressee ultimately proves to be the type who disregards Lauren to the point that he proceeds to ‘ignore’ her and cheat, instead of manning up and keeping it real.

Then, there is also the implication that he has tried to come back into her life after the fact, only to be met by a permanently-cold shoulder.  And comprehensively, reading in between the lines, the addressee comes off as a dude who simply isn’t mature enough to handle a woman’s love.

Now concerning the aforementioned cold shoulder, the reason Lauren behaved so, based on her own explanation, is that she came to the realization that she “deserved better” than what her ex had to offer. And what the title of this song actually points to is the notion that the singer has in fact moved on. That is to imply that as with her ex, the songstress’s current boyfriend also gives her “flowers”. However, unlike the past, the new beau is not utilizing said gifts solely “for big apologies”. Or more simply put, he isn’t constantly f***ing up like the addressee was doing when he had the vocalist.

Conclusively yes, the lyrics of this song are relatively deep for an 18 year old pop singer. But ultimately, what they boil down to is the vocalist eventually coming to the realization – in part due to a new, more edifying romance – that her previous lover was indeed toxic.
