“Fingers Crossed” by Lauren Spencer-Smith

This piece (“Fingers Crossed”) starts off as a love song. But before the first verse finishes, the vocalist lets it be known that in the here and now, she actually ‘hates’ the addressee. The reason she despises the addressee is because, as later implied by the chorus, the two of them have broken up under tumultuous circumstances.

It is not specified what happened exactly. But in the aftermath, Lauren is under the impression that she vested more into this relationship than the addressee, i.e. devoting endless hours to rectifying his inner “daddy issues” and what have you.

At the end of the day, she does in fact blame them for things going awry, which brings us to the title. When someone makes a commitment with their “fingers crossed”, that means that they’re already acknowledging, secretly, that they’re not going to remain true to their word.  And that is what the vocalist is saying to the addressee, that she now realizes when they said ‘I love you’, they didn’t really mean it, which is another way of saying that they ultimately did her dirty. So as it currently stands, it’s like Lauren detests them.
