Glass Animals – Your Love (Déjà Vu)

Glass Animals’ “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” is based on toxic interpersonal relationships and how individuals have a tendency to get addicted to such treatment from loved ones. There are many elaborate metaphors used throughout which may seem as if they deviate from this topic. But the part of the song where this intended idea is made most evident is in the bridge.  Here, the singer most-forthrightly states that he has some type of beef with the addressee, as in perceiving this individual as not truly having his back.  But then he concludes the passage by stating that he actually wants this person to ‘eat him alive’, as in cause him great harm.

Moreover in the chorus, he compares the love of this individual to a “temporary touch” and “hit and run”. That would basically allude to the idea that sometimes this person is favorable, and at others he or she is not. But again, the designed unique angle of this track isn’t that it centers on a toxic association, as many other songs tend to do also. Rather it is its aim to speak to the human tendency to become comfortable in dealing with a loved one who has the tendency to damage our emotions.

Meaning of “Déjà Vu” as used in the Title

So the “déjà vu” in the track’s title would ultimately allude to the notion that the singer’s abuse at the hands of the addressee is a repeated, indeed even regular, occurrence. And the word “love”, which is also found in the title, would be sarcastic to some extent. Or let’s say that the singer recognizes that the addressee’s affection towards him also includes regular mistreatment.

What Dave Bayley said about “Your Love (Déjà Vu)”

Dave Bayley took a universal approach in explaining the basis of this song.  And in that regard he acknowledges “f up relationships” as something which everyone goes through. Moreover he recognizes the human tendency for some individuals in such associations to perpetuate these relationships, even to their own emotional detriment. And one such situation he cites in particular which contributes to this reality is the “tense households” many of us grow up in.

And basically, Bayley believes that individuals tolerate these toxic bonds due to any of the following reasons:

  • Having a reluctance to change
  • Possessing low self-esteem
  • Being comfortable in such circumstances

Or as he phrases it, some people are so used to these types of situations that they become “addicted to chaos”. But as aforementioned, living under such circumstances yields undesirable emotional results.
