“Goosebumps” by HVME

As further expounded on in the second-half of this post, “Goosebumps” is a cover of a Travis Scott song. In other words, Hvme himself did not write any of the lyrics. And his cover, lyric wise, is virtually identical to the original “Goosebumps”, with the one notable exception being that K-Dot’s verse does not appear in Hvme’s version.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for HVME's Goosebumps at Lyrics.org.

And the reason we’re bringing that up is because even though Hvme, as with presumably many of the fans of this song, may personally identify with the lyrics, ultimately they are based on Travis Scott’s personal sentiments.

We can also presume that he is the foremost author amongst the many credited writers of this tune. And as Travis explained it, he wrote “Goosebumps” ‘during one of the darkest times in his life’.

And that disposition is sorta relayed conveyed in the chorus, i.e. the vocalist indirectly noting how his mind is troubled, most notably, as implied, by negative comments about him on social media. But more to the point would be that the addressee, a romantic interest, serves as the remedy to said depression. And it is actually her presence that gives the vocalists “goosebumps”, i.e. makes him noticeably giddy, if you will.

Or put more bluntly, “Goosebumps” is in fact a love song. It features the type of inferred braggadocio and tough talk one would expect from a piece penned by the likes of Travis Scott. But what it all boils down to is the vocalist having a lady in his life whom he apparently prefers to be with more so than spending time doing anything else.

Or more simply put, he is in love. And again, as stated this would be primarily due to the fact said addressee, via her presence alone, manages to help the vocalist forget about some of the less-than-ideal aspects of his life.

When was “Goosebumps” released?

“Goosebumps” is a track that was originally dropped by Travis Scott, featuring Kendrick Lamar, in 2016. And as to be expected from a track via two hip-hop heavyweights of the era, this song proved to be a major hit. Actually it is one of the biggest in Scott’s discography.

However, the version we’re focusing on today is actually a cover of the original, by a Spanish DJ known as Hvme. His version was dropped on 11 June 2020. And by the looks of things he released it without going through the proper channels, i.e. getting official authorization from Travis Scott and co.

However, said cover also proceeded to become an international hit. So by mid-January 2021, Scott did lend his backing to Hvme’s take on the song. And that was also the same time, i.e. 15 January 2021, when Travis also dropped a remix of “Goosebumps” alongside Hvme, which was yet another notable success.

So as it currently stands, there are three official versions of this song. They are as follows:

  • The original
  • Hvme’s cover
  • The remix between Hvme and Travis Scott

Some More Facts

Hvme’s version charted in close to 20 nations, almost exclusively in his home continent of Europe. And it has also reached double-platinum status in Portugal. This is in addition to being certified in a few other countries, including Brazil, where it has gone platinum.

By the looks of things, the cover of this tune is by far the biggest song Hvme has ever put out.

It would seem that when Hvme first put “Goosebumps” out, prior to Scott’s approval, it was done so via a label called Lithuania HQ. And that is one of three companies behind the issuance of his cover. The two other labels are B1 Records (which Hvme is apparently signed to) and Columbia.

And to note, Hvme’s rendition, as well as the remix between him and Scott, is classified as being part of the deep house genre.

Being that this is in fact a cover, the original Goosebumps writers are also credited as such concerning Hvme’s rendition. And they are:

  • CuBeatz (Tim and Kevin Gomringer)
  • Cardo
  • Brock Korsan
  • Yung Exclusive
  • Travis Scott
  • Kendrick Lamar

But of course Hvme produced his own version.
