“I Love You” by Fontaines D.C.

We get the impression from studying the works of various Irish musicians that the Irish are a people who take political matters very seriously. And amongst those artists are Fontaines D.C., who by the looks of this song are also heavily into complex metaphors.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Fontaines D.C.'s I Love You at Lyrics.org.

But we know based on a statement made by Grian Chatten that the addressee is most likely a personification of Ireland. Therefore when he chants “I love you”, the full statement would read like ‘I love you, Ireland’. And with this understanding in mind, some of the aforementioned metaphors become a lot easier to decipher.

For instance, one of the thesis sentiments would be the vocalist’s undying love for his country. But it is also implied herein that maybe Grian’s people have sold out, at least under his perception. And in the aftermath, whereas they may have come out better materially, they did so at the sacrifice of safety or what have you.

Fontaines D.C. also proceeds to engage in what looks like a criticism of the efficacy of the powers that be as far as Ireland is concerned. But as alluded to earlier, whereas some parts of this piece are understandable, others are not so much. Yet and still, the lyrics do a good job of relaying a sentiment. And that would be the vocalist having some type of a beef with his homeland based on the nature of its history and the way it is run. But that said, he will always love Ireland.
