“In God’s Hands” by Nelly Furtado

It has been noted that “In God’s Hands” is based on Nelly Furtado’s real life, i.e. her relationship with another musician named DJ Jasper Gahunia. This is the individual she dated for four years, with their relationship ending in 2005. He is also the father of who will likely remain Furtado’s only child, Nevis Gahunia. So, we know their romance was deep.

And this song chronicles the singer’s feelings and observations as they were in the midst of parting ways. For instance, she notes from the onset that “all the love had died” in their relationship. Indeed her partner is behaving in such a way where he seemingly isn’t overly interested in the two of them meeting the future together. Then by the second verse he seems to be introducing the idea that they should indeed breakup. Moreover in the bridge, it is revealed that Nelly attributes the dissolution of their relationship to both of them not properly ‘respecting’ the love they shared, an idea which is sort of expounded upon in the pre-chorus.

Whereas the singer doesn’t specifically get into how much they loved each other or anything like that, it is still pretty obvious, considering the titular allegory, that this was a special one in her life. For what she is saying is that their ‘love began… in God’s hands’.  That’s another way of putting forth her belief that this relationship was heaven-sent. So more than anything, the primary sentiment being relayed is one of remorse and disappointment. Indeed by the end of the song, Furtado is forthrightly exclaiming that she ‘just wants back what they had’.
