“It Gets Dark” by Sigrid

The lyrics of “It Gets Dark” are inspired by a space-travel motif, with the concept of us laymen actually venturing out into the cosmos becoming increasingly in vogue these days. But Sigrid of course is making such references as a metaphor. And perhaps the simplest way of explaining what they symbolize, including the title, is alluding to the concept of the vocalist stepping outside of her comfort zone.

And whereas doing so may be intrinsically frightening, there is also gratification to be found therein. That’s why she goes on to state that it is amidst the darkness where she “can see the stars”.

Said darkness, based on Sigrid’s own explanation of this piece, can also be said to be pointing to the depressing times we go through in life. And under her estimation, it is such melancholy which makes us appreciate the good times all the more.

This piece is also influenced by a special chapter in Sigrid’s life. This chapter came as a result of her blowing up professionally. Owing to this, she was forced to leave her country, Norway, and travel very far away from her home to “big cities like London and LA”. In doing so, she came to the realization that a different, shall we say wilder side of her personality tends to come out.

This song is about embracing that “duality and contrast”, as the songstress put it in her own words.

So more simply explained, the narrator has learned not to be intimidated by dissimilar sides of her character. Or put differently yet again, a person may not act the same in two completely different environments, which is something that Sigrid has come to accept about herself.
