“Letter to My Daughter” by NLE Choppa

“Letter to My Daughter” is a very personalized song as its vocalist, NLE Choppa, is directly addressing his daughter, Clover. Clover became NLE’s firstborn in mid-2020, with the rapper being 17 years old at the time. And it is one of those situations where he is concurrently caught up in a serious beef with the baby’s mother, Mariah. 

So even though he wants to be more involved in his daughter’s life, such is not possible due to the discontent which exists between the two of them.

Thus there are two primary sentiments upon which this piece is based. First and foremost, underneath it all would be Choppa’s love for Clover. But on the surface, it’s more like he’s in his feelings as a result of being denied access to his child. So the conclusive sentiment would once again be his desire to be more involved, including Clover becoming familiar with the paternal side of her ancestry.

And there’s more revealed along the way. For instance, it would appear another reason NLE has been separated from the child has something to do with his legal woes (i.e. being arrested). Also he’s definitely not appreciative of the fact that ‘another n**ga is playing the role’ of her “daddy”, i.e. the baby mother’s boyfriend being more involved in Clover’s life than he is. But Choppa is wise enough to know that he can’t lose his cool or anything like that.

Rather he perceives the situation as a major challenge/learning experience which fate has thrown his way, so to speak. But in the meantime, he is hoping that his baby’s mom can forgive him and allow the vocalist to be a part of his daughter’s life. And he’s also advising Clover to conduct herself wisely as she navigates through life in his absence, on top of course acknowledging that her father loves her.

What “Letter to My Daughter”

So “Letter to My Daughter” actually marks a rare occurrence in the music addressee, i.e. a song from an estranged father to his child. And at the end of the day we know that NLE Choppa desires peace with his equally-estranged ex, even if only in the name of affording him the opportunity to be in his daughter’s life.

As of the issuance of this track NLE Choppa is considered to be one of the top newjacks in the rap game. That is to say that the Memphis native just dropped his first studio album, Top Shotta, in 2020. Also within the time span of just two years, from 2019 to 2020, he was involved in three double-platinum hits, including the Top Shotta track Walk Me Down. Another of those hits, his debut joint Shotta Flow, serves as Choppa’s highest showing on the Billboard Hot 100 to date, peaking at the 36^th position. So also during 2020, NLE was recognized for his great potential by being named onto XXL’s Freshman Class of the year.

“Letter to My Daughter”

“Letter to My Daughter” appears to be a feature on NLE’s upcoming second studio album, which is untitled as at the time of the track’s release.

Apparently at the heart of the beef between NLE Choppa and Mariah, his baby’s mother, is something like NLE continually cheating on her. And whereas Mariah isn’t necessarily a celebrity herself, as of the writing of this post she does have a sizable following of almost 600,000 subscribers on Instagram.

Not only is the release date of this song, 20 June 2021, Father’s Day for said year, but it would also mark Clover’s first birthday.
