Meaning of “I Want Candy” by Aaron Carter

As put forth in the intro, Aaron Carter’s romantic interest, i.e. the apple of his eye, is named “Candy”. But in the chorus, the word “candy” is not spelled with a capital C. Rather, as also utilized in the first two verses, the term comes off as standing for something else.

Most innocently interpreted, that would be the lovin’ that the vocalist’s girlfriend, i.e. the aforementioned “Candy”, provides him. But the third verse also connotes that “candy” is something more general, outside of the realm of this specific romance. And it wouldn’t necessarily be sex itself, but let’s say anything along the lines of fooling around with a woman.

So in a strange sorta way, it can actually be concluded that this is a love song. That is to say that outside of the third verse and chorus, the vocalist makes it pretty clear that he is singing to a specific individual, i.e. his honeybun.

Also note that at the time this track was dropped, Aaron would’ve only been 12 years old. So even though “I Want Candy” definitely has a sexual undertone despite being presented by a singer who was perhaps prepubescent at the time, the lyrics definitely don’t come off as being raunchy in the contemporary musical landscape. But that would most likely be because they were originally written for a mid-1960s’ audience.
