“Ocean” by Lady Antebellum

The best way to describe the premise of this song is as the word “ocean” – and all of the associated imagery it entails – being a metaphor for the singer’s relationship with her lover. Thus when she makes a statement like she’s “not afraid to drown”, such points to the idea of Hillary Scott, Lady Antebellum’s lead singer, casting fear aside to commit herself wholeheartedly to the addressee, i.e. her romantic interest.

You totally missed the point of the song. It’s not a just a generic relationship where the guy isn’t committing. There’s hardly any relationship at all because the guy is shutting her out because of his inner demons.

Chuck you nailed it with your comment. Thats the exact meaning of this song.

The song is about the singer pleading with her partner to share whatever internal struggles with her.
The ocean is a metaphor of her partner’s whole being. She just wants to be let in and is not afraid of whatever darkness inside.
For whatever reasons, the partner is not sharing the internal turmoils he/she is facing. She does not want to merely be there at the sidelines (I’m so tired of the shore) but wants to be a part of whatever her partner is going through and face whatever together (I want to swim in you).

I honestly thought this song was about watching your loved dealing with Dementia. My husband is suffering with the horrible disease and days I felt this way. This how I will relate to the song.
