“On Chill” by Wale (ft. Jeremih)

The primary idea Wale’s “On Chill” seems to be based on is Wale taking it slow in building a relationship with a new girlfriend. The main reason for him conducting himself in this way is that they have both been in unsuccessful romances in the past. So not only does he want to prevent reliving such pain, but he also wants to alleviate some of the heartbreak his current sweetheart has already experienced.

Meanwhile Jeremih holds down the chorus. And his tone is a bit different, as in it does not necessarily fit with the storyline Wale is relaying. Also the titular concept of ‘chilling’ with this lady is used in different contexts throughout the song. In the chorus, the singer is stating that he and his partner should “chill”, as in taking a break from quarreling each other. But in other parts of the track, such as the bridge, the term is used to imply engaging in an activity such as going on a date. To some degree these usages are synonyms, but within the particular sections they are present they do not necessarily seem to be. In other words, the song transitions from being centered on a challenged, tumultuous relationship to one that appears to be tender and blissful.

So all things considered, the storyline of this song is a bit confusing. For instance, there are other discrepancies, such as the song being centered on a romantic partner the singer seems to have been with for a while at some points and at others one he is now trying to get with. In some sections the narrative sounds as if the singer cares for a certain lady and is already doing everything romantic with her but is reluctant to actually commit. And still at others it appears the singer wants nothing more than to be in a serious relationship with her. 

So perhaps at the end of the day, the person being addressed in this song is actually two different ladies, as in Wale is singing about one individual and Jeremih another.

Release Date of “On Chill”

Wale teased the release of “On Chill” via Instagram on 9 July 2019 and via Twitter on 10 July 2019. It was officially released by Warner Records a couple of days later on 12 July 2019.

Though “On Chill” came out as a standalone single, it is expected to be featured on a forthcoming Wale album.

Is this Wale and Jeremih’s first collaboration?

No. Wale must be fond of working with Jeremih, as he featured him on two of his previous tracks – 2011’s “That Way” and 2014’s “The Body”.
