“Oops!… I Did It Again” by Britney Spears

“Oops!… I Did It Again” features Britney Spears taking on the role of someone akin to a female playa, and the addressee would be her current romantic interest. The problem is that whereas this dude is obviously diggin’ her, the feeling isn’t mutual.

Or more accurately the vocalist let her playful, we can say even somewhat-insensitive romantic side get the best of her. Or simply put, she led the addressee feel the two of them were an item when in fact, at least in her mind, they aren’t.

So the lyrics of the song serve two purposes. First is to let this guy that honestly, she isn’t that serious. And secondly it features Brit sort of beating up on herself for once “again” making the mistake of playing with someone’s heart.

Narrator is a Serial Heartbreaker

And on the surface, it sounds as if she is regretting doing so to this same dude over and over. But such an understanding wouldn’t really make sense. Or let’s say it’s not likely that he would keep being fooled by the same woman who habitually dumps him.

So the more-common understanding is more like the vocalist has already done this to a number of different guys, with the current addressee being her most-recent victim.

And again, the singer isn’t proud of this addictive tendency she possesses to break dudes’ heart. But at the same time, she definitely doesn’t come off as being overtaken by self-guilt either.

Indeed the thesis sentiment of this song may not be so much that she is careless in the way she treats romantic interest. Rather as noted in the chorus, it may be that she is “not that innocent”.

This statement speaks not only to the storyline of the song but also Britney’s career at the time, as the masses had difficulty deciding whether she was an innocent teen or a sexualized adult. In other words, she was sort of portraying both of those roles simultaneously.

So one of the purposes of this song was to set the record straight, that Spears did in fact know what time it was. And the fact that she is not some innocuous, run-of-the-mill teen is something which her current boyfriend is learning the hard way.

Music Video

Nigel Dick, who directed the trendsetting music video to Britney’s hit single “…Baby One More Time“, was also put in charge of the creation of the video for this track.

And like the one to …Baby, the Oops… music video earned Britney Spears and co. three MTV VMA nominations.

Also like …Baby, it didn’t actually win any. But just to note, in 2000 Oops… was nominated in the categories of Best Female VideoBest Pop Video and Viewer’s Choice.

Said music video was filmed in Universal City, a large part of Los Angeles owned by Universal Pictures. During its filming, which took place in mid-March 2000, Britney suffered a minor accident where a camera hit her in the head.

Fashion-wise, the clip was stylized by Estee Stanley. And it features Britney rockin’ what would become one of her trademark looks, a bright-red jumpsuit/bodysuit. That was an idea Brit came up with herself, as well as the visual being fictitiously set on the planet of Mars.

Release Date of “Oops!… I Did It Again”

This is the lead single and title track from Britney Spears second album. It served the same purpose that another song featuring ellipses, “…Baby One More Time” (1998) did for Britney’s first album.

And it’s apparent she was trying to reclaim the same magic (i.e. utilize the identical formula) in this one. For instance, Oops… was written and produced by Max Martin and Rami, which are also fundamentally the same roles they took on in …Baby

And it was also recorded in the same location, Stockholm’s Cheiron Studios, which was the stomping grounds of Max Martin.

In other words …Baby was a major success that they wanted to emulate. And whereas Oops… did not quite hit on the same level, it still made ridiculous achievements nonetheless.

Accomplishments of “Oops!… I Did It Again”

This track reached number 1 in approximately 20 nations. It managed to do so on the UK Singles Chart, the UK Indie Chart, European Hot 100 Singles and Canada Top Singles, amongst others.

It did not, however, accomplish this feat on the Billboard Hot 100 as did …Baby. But it did top Billboard’s Pop Songs listing. And the song also went platinum or better in a handful of countries, including the UK.

Similar to “…Baby One More Time”, this song also earned Britney Spears a Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy nomination. But also like …Baby she didn’t actually win the award. And this case it went Macy Gray’s 1999 offering “I Try”.

“Oops… I Did It Again” set a record as far as radio stations go. And that was it being added to the playlists of 155 different stations during the first week of its release.

More Facts about “Oops!… I Did It Again”

The music video to this track features one David Rountree who, according to IMDB, takes on the role of the “hunk”. And Rountree actually went on to achieve a versatile career in filmography.

The official release date of this track was on 27 March 2000, coming out via Jive Records.

Oops!... I Did It Again

The first time Britney Spears rendered this song live was actually before its initial release. She did so on 8 March 2000 at the Pensacola Civic Center, which was the first stop on her You Drive Me Crazy Tour (aka Crazy 2K Tour).

This song has enjoyed a notable pop-media presence, being featured in television shows, video games, etc.

And in terms of popular artists who covered it, Selena Gomez did so as part of her We Own the Night Tour (2011-2012) alongside her former band, The Scene.

Album-wise, both “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops… I Did It Again” have been RIAA-certified diamond, meaning that they both sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies.

This made Britney Spears the first (and still only some two decades later) female artist in history to have both of her first two albums go diamond.
