“Ramblin Man” by Sam Barber

Social media based musician Sam Barber appears to be on the cusp of achieving mainstream notoriety via the success of his breakthrough track, “Straight and Narrow”, as of mid-2023. However, he has been releasing songs for a minute, and one of his earlier notable works is “Ramblin Man”, which came out on 9 May 2022 and, as with apparently all of his tunes thus far, was written by Barber himself.

The Lyrics of “Ramblin Man”

If you do a quick Google search of the word “rambling”, it has an additional definition that is perhaps unbeknownst to many. According to Oxford, when used as a noun it is defined as “the activity of walking in the countryside for pleasure”.

And that is what Barber is getting at in this song, depicting himself as a character who finds himself “rambling”, along with “an old six string and calloused hands”. Those later observations would imply that he’s a musician, i.e. the traveling type who plays for pleasure.

And the reason why this man finds himself on the road during this era of his life is in search of “some perseverance” and his happy place, “where it never rains, and the roads are always clear”. Or a simpler way of putting it is that this man is in search of his destiny, and he understands that for the time being, “this old road is (his) home”. So whereas, as implied, the journey isn’t all gravy, he’s taking the experience as being part and parcel of reaching his ultimate goal.

“Well, I am just a ramblin’ man
With an old six string and calloused hands
And I’ll keep doing this on this dry land
Until I can find myself some perseverance”
