“Drowning” by Sam Barber

“Drowning”, which was released on 22 March 2023, is the title track of an EP of sorts which also features an acoustic version of the song. And it appears that the reason the track is titled so is twofold. First of all, the painful act of drowning is presented as a metaphor for the vocalist’s current emotional state.

And the reason he is so is due to the absence of the addressee which, all lyrics considered, can be taken as Sam’s sweetheart. Or there’s at least what can be deemed one solid clue in that regard, whereas at the end of the second verse we have the vocalist lamenting his decision to leave this person to begin with.

Secondly, drowning is an act which can occur when a person is submerged in water. And relatedly it would seem, the lyrics are based on a water-related motif, especially as far as the first verse and chorus are concerned.

“There’s this storm cloud headin’ my way
And it keeps on pourin’ down tears of pain
Well, this wind stirs up a hurricane
And I’ll keep on drownin’ as long as you’re away”
