“Storage” by Conor Maynard

Conor Maynard is a British singer who achieved notable success earlier on, with his debut studio album, “Contrast” (2012), topping the UK Albums Chart. However its follow-up, 2016’s “Covers”, didn’t perform nearly as well.

The years that followed also haven’t been kind as far as chart success is concerned, but Maynard remains on the grind and is on the verge of dropping an 11-track EP titled “+11 Hours” in about a month and a half after this writing.

So “Storage”, which was released on 28 April 2023, marks the third single from that effort, respectively following “If I Ever” and another track titled “By Your Side”, both of which came out earlier in the year.

Conor Maynard wrote and produced “Storage” in conjunction with Brendan Buckley. The song’s other producer is Ray Michael Djan Jr., with Anth and Corey Nyell also serving as writers.

Storage

Lyrics of “Storage”

The title of this song alludes to is the “storage” space of our minds. Our brains are more or less able to hold an infinite amount of data, or let’s more specifically say memories. And it is precisely that massive storage capacity which the vocalist is lamenting, within the context of addressing his ex.

That is to say that Conor seems to remember every minute detail about their relationship and his former partner. And so it is with serious romances, as in you tend to get to know every little thing about the other person and also get used to having them by your side.

But that said, it also isn’t helping that Conor has held on to “the messages” and “photos” dating all the way back to when they first met. So going back to the title, what the singer is putting forth is that he has retained so many memories and emotions from his relationship with the addressee that now he’s “out of storage”.

“I’m lying all alone
I can’t seem to fall asleep inside my home
‘Cause all I see is you and me
Wish I could ignore it
The memories and forfeit
The pain this is causing me now
I try to say I’m fine
But there’s no room for nothing else
Inside my mind
I can’t forget the way I felt
Wish I could ignore it
‘Cause it’s not important
Please rid me of all of it now
‘Cause I’m out of storage”

As pointed out earlier, literally running out of brain space is virtually impossible. So that statement, all lyrics considered, alludes to the vocalist feeling emotionally worn, for lack of a more concise way of putting it.

Or as Maynard has described this piece in his own words, sometimes marriages, if you will, can degenerate into a situation where the parties involved have broken up, and you have no idea where the other person is or what she’s currently doing, and vice versa.

Yet and still, all of those minute details about her, as noted earlier, populate your brain. Or put otherwise, let’s say that breaking up and going your separate ways doesn’t result in the other party being magically erased from your soul. Such is the suffering that the vocalist is going through.

His ex is gone, perhaps never to be reclaimed. However, he is unable to erase the associated memories, sentiments and even mannerisms, like being unable to “fall asleep inside (his) home” without her around.
