Lyrics of “Thicker than Blood”

The thesis sentiment revolves around the vocalist’s assertion that “love is thicker than blood”. That is to say that, under his estimation, said emotion is even more powerful than genetic relations. And in making such a statement, what he’s trying to get at is the notion that love for your fellow man should supersede respective group affiliations and ideologies.

Or put otherwise belonging to a different political party, race, family or what have you should not be a basis upon which to hate someone who adheres or thinks differently.

So this is, according to frontman Gary Cherone, “a critique of tribalism” that was specifically inspired by “division going on politically”. And it is interesting that Extreme had the insight to drop such a track, considering that even more-recent events have some pundits arguing that the political climate in their homeland of the United States is worse than it’s ever been.
