“Save Me” by Extreme

“Save Me” is sorta like one of those suicide songs we’ve been coming across of late, in that at the conclusion of the chorus the vocalist overtly expresses a desire to die.

But more to the point is why he feels this way to begin with. And that’s because, as implied, he has spent of his life making the wrong decisions – specifically, it would seem, from a moral standpoint and seemingly in the name of wealth acquisition.

Furthermore, despite being able to recognize these personal shortcomings, the narrator obviously lacks confidence in his ability to change for the better. So that’s why the thesis sentiment revolves around him looking for someone to ‘save him from himself’.

It is not clear whom exactly he is expecting to aid from in that regard. But more simply interpreted, the vocalist appears convinced that he is hellbound and even besides that is dealing with the negative consequences of his character here and now. So all lyrics and sentiments considered, “Save Me” does possess what can be deemed as a religious or spiritual undertone.

“Save me from myself
Save me from this hell
Help me, heaven, I’m forsaken
Lay me down to die
Cleanse me of these lies
I’ve become what I despise
Take me, undertaker, take me
Lay me down to die”

When was “Save Me” released?

Given Gary Cherone is a non-denominational Christian and there is lots of Christian imagery and messaging in a few of Extreme’s songs (X Out and It’s a Monster most notably) this is probably a song about the need for salvation.
