“Other Side of the Rainbow” by Extreme
“Other Side of the Rainbow” is a track that was released through EarMusic on 31 May 2023, as the fourth single from Extreme’s album “Six” and the final one they put out before releasing the album itself.
As with seemingly all of the other track’s on the LP, this one was produced by Nuno Bettencourt, who also serves as the Extreme’s guitarist. Furthermore, Nuno also directed this track’s music video with Rene Rigal.
Lyrics of “Other Side of the Rainbow”
The title of this song, “other side of the rainbow”, is a phrase that was inspired by another, “over the rainbow”, which you may be familiar with as having come from The Wizard of Oz (1939).
More specifically, as far as the latter case goes, it is the name of a famous song contained within the film. And more to the point is what “over the rainbow” represents the vocalist’s vision of a perfect or better world.
And so it is in the case of Extreme’s song. But what the vocalist is using the titular phrase for exactly is basically to sell the idea of a relationship with him to the addressee, his romantic interest.
This is someone who, as poetically revealed in the lyrics, has had a difficult time in the field of love, so much so that she has become woefully discouraged therein. But to reiterate, the singer appears as if he may be the one to break the curse.
Indeed, Gary Cherone presents himself as coming from a similar background, one where his “faith in love” has also been minimized. And he also understands that this may all sound like a game of seduction to the addressee, i.e. him coming off as her knight in shining armor.
But the lyrics infer that sentiment as being genuine on his behalf, i.e. Gary feeling as if he truly is the one for this person he’s singing to.
