“Those Nights” by Bastille

Bastille’s “Those Nights” is a song founded on the premise of loneliness. In other words, “those nights” are evenings in which the singer’s “friends are gone”, and he “crave(s) someone”, specifically within the context of this song a lover.

To him, this experience represents the fulfillment of two things “we all” desire “these days”. One is “a little bit of hope”, and the other is “somebody (to) wake up with”. And as can be seen throughout the track, he has found someone to spend the night with, a person whom all things considered he doesn’t even know. And in the process he questions the legitimacy of this union, as in whether it is a quick relief or something long-term. But more than anything, it seems his main intent is just to enjoy this encounter, particularly in an intimate sense.

However, he alludes to some type of ultimate lack of fulfillment, as he states that people engaged in such activities are “try(ing) to get to heaven” via these experiences yet always fail to do so. This theory becomes more-credible when considering the theme of the song which follows on the Doom Days concept album (“Joy”, which is based on the events after “Those Nights”), in which the singer is basically regretting these actions.

What all of this boils down to is the singer looking for a special type of companion which as at the moment he does not have.
