Zach Bryan’s “Starved” is a relatively-poetic song of heartbreak. The chronology of the narrative may be a bit confusing, but what it all boils down to is the vocalist, at some point or points, is coming to the sad realization that he must part ways with the addressee, despite recognizing that she is in fact the one. 

That stated reason for him doing so is something along the lines of Zach realizing that he is not “good” for her. We will mercifully take this as Zach alluding to him not being mature enough to handle the responsibility of her love.

Or it may be , as alluded to in the chorus, that they got back together for a short time, not necessarily romantically but in the name of reminiscing and reconnecting considering that they are indeed, as implied, soulmates and/or maybe each other’s first love. 

But in any event, it can be put forth that the thesis sentiment revolves around the vocalist knowing, even if he did/does have his reasons for doing so, that he lost a good thing in parting ways with the addressee.

This is a song that Zach Bryan began playing live, sometime circa mid-to-late 2022. As the story goes, fans took an immediately-strong liking to it upon hearing it. Owing to this, he decided to release a demo, studio and live version of the song on 10 October 2022.

The latter version was actually recorded a little over a week beforehand.
