Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” Lyrics Meaning
The premise of this song is a “pill” which Mike Posner took on the Spanish island of Ibiza while chilling one night with the late Avicii (1989-2018). However, the song itself is not about the “high” he experienced which made him feel “10 years older”. Instead most of the track is based on the depression he felt as a result of his success, specifically in regards to rising and falling in the music industry. And along those lines he is telling the audience that despite the success he experienced, they do not want to be “high like (him)”. This is Posner’s way of saying that making it big is not all it’s cracked up to be And why? Because for the most part it is a lonely experience.
This song alludes to the time when Posner was considered a one-hit wonder. Thus it illustrates the sensations he felt not so much when he was ascending but rather when he was coming back down to earth. And during that time he was apparently suffering from self-esteem issues.
We get further insights into Posner’s personality, like the fact that he has reservation “open(ing) up” to the opposite sex, which prevents him from getting into a long-term relationship.
Conclusion
Indeed this song, taken in its entirety, has very little to do with “pill(s)” or “Ibiza”. It is rather a glimpse into the inner reflections the artist has concerning his interactions with fame. And ultimately it reads as if he is warning the audience not to get too caught up in fantasies associated with popularity.
