“Beautiful Morning” by Avenged Sevenfold

“Beautiful Morning” is one of those songs that’s so metaphorical that it’s virtually impossible to pin down, comprehensively and specifically, what the vocalist is getting at.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Avenged Sevenfold's Beautiful Morning at Lyrics.org.

This may be in part due to the fact that a significant part of the lyrics, as relayed by M. Shadows, was written some years back, circa the turn of the century (i.e. back when Synyster Gates was a member of Pinkly Smoothly). But it is also pretty apparent that the wording of “Beautiful Morning” is painfully indirect by design.

Usually in the instance of such songs, there’s at least one passage that’s readily understandable. That would be portions of the song’s second verse. Here, it can be ascertained that the vocalist is imagining how it would feel to be dead. Such appears to be sort of a subtheme of “Life Is but a Dream…”, at least as far as some of the tracks are concerned.

“I lay quiet, floating in the stillness of this tomb
Headstone empty, choking on the flowers as they bloom”

That would then beg the question as to why Avenged Sevenfold who drop a song that deals with death and title it “Beautiful Morning”. The answer to that question isn’t abundantly clear either, though said title is likely, all things considered, built on a fantasy.

In other words – as with “(D)eath“, another found on the album – it may be that the vocalist is fantasizing about dying or even idealizes passing away. Or another way of interpreting this piece, especially as far as the first verse is concerned, is as alluding to M contemplating unaliving himself. And on one hand, he perceives that prospect as a “beautiful” one. But on the other, as also expressed in the first verse, he is looking for someone to ‘save him before he’s gone too far’.
