Lyrics of “Easier”

The first line of this song more or less says it all, that “it’s easier to just walk away”. As a premise to what’s being put forth, what the vocalist does with the first verse is recognize that life sometimes can be difficult and accordingly disheartening. And the second verse, though not as easy to understand, seems to buttress that notion in an indirect way.

So let’s say the theme of this song, comprehensively, seems to revolve around mocking those who give, i.e. quitters, via the narrator taking on the role of such a person, that being someone who has decided to take the “easier” way out.

In other words, he has apparently grown weary of the constant struggle associated with pursuing certain goals. So in that regard, the vocalist’s philosophy appears to be along the lines of understanding that giving up, in the moment, can be counted as a loss.

“It’s easier to just walk away
I know you’ll see brighter days along the way”

But eventually, “you’ll see brighter days along the way”. Or phrased otherwise and as implied at the ending of the second verse, we shouldn’t judge quitters until all is said and done, “until the end of the ride” or what have you.

But again, it’s obvious that Avenged Sevenfold isn’t actually espousing the practice of quitting due to morale issues. There may not be any punchline or overt change of sentiment as far as the lyrics go. But logically speaking, it isn’t likely that any musician would drop a track, especially these days, that supports the notion of quitting when times get hard.

Or let’s say that in this current world, more people appear to be going through hardship than not. So in a roundabout way this can actually be counted as a song of encouragement, positing that quitting is indeed easier, though it greatly minimizes the prospect of one taking control of his or her own destiny.
