“Clap Back” by Iggy Azalea

As can be deduced from the title (“Clap Back”), Iggy Azalea is adopting a confrontational attitude in this song. She is basically “clap(ping) back”, as in counterattacking, haters. And indeed her haters are many.

From the chorus we learn that one of the main gripes she has is against people who think she’s “trying (to) act Black”. In other words, Iggy has dealt with a fair share of criticism from individuals who claim that, due to being a White Australian rapper, she is actually a ‘culture vulture’, as in an individual who is making a living off of exploiting African-American culture (i.e. hip-hop). But in this song, Azalea pretty much rubbishes this. She goes on to tag people who say things about her as haters.

Indeed most of “Clap Back” is not so much devoted to addressing critics per se as it is Iggy touting her lifestyle as a rich, successful, bad girl rapper. The bad girl part really comes off for instance when she talks about her ex-boyfriends and record label. She portrays one of her exes in particular as wanting her back. But in general she disses all of ex-lovers, even implying that they cannot keep up with her cashflow. And as far as her relationship with her label, she states that those who said she got dropped are lying. Instead now she ‘owns all her masters’, which in this case would be master recordings, as in now she is signed to her own record label.

So all things considered, this track features the kind of braggadocio we are becoming accustomed to via female rappers. That is to say Iggy’s primary focus is bigging up herself while simultaneously berating her female rivals. But overall she is ‘clapping back’ at all her haters by reminding them that not only is she beautiful but also rich. And her eyes are set on becoming even more glamorous and wealthy into the future. Thus this song epitomizes the proverb of paying back your enemies via your success.
