“Started” by Iggy Azalea

The best way to describe this song is that Iggy Azalea approaches the track a lot like a male rapper, just from a female perspective. Or put differently, “Started” is based primarily on her wealth and ability to kick a**.  In fact the main difference between this and the average male rap is that Iggy doesn’t really get sexual.

Also, her lyrics are cartoonish at points, such as Iggy referring to “Mufasa”
from “The Lion King”.

Origin of Song’s Title

The title comes from the first line of the chorus, “I started from the
bottom and now I’m rich”. The first clause of the aforementioned line was actually derived from a 2013 Drake track.  This basically means that this song is intended to read like a rags-to-riches story. And to some extent that is what it actually is, as the main topic discussed is Iggy’s “M’s”, and she “ain’t talking Slim Shady”.

Moreover she uses the word “started” to refer to fans she has won over
who initially ‘hated’ her. She also uses the term to allude to the fact that she at first considered approaching this track from a more-peaceful disposition but ultimately said “f*ck that sh*t”.

Attack on “bi*ches”

Also, Azalea uses this song as a venue to throw ample shade at “bi*ches”
who be “biting” her style and can’t compete with her looks. Moreover
she threatens those who “look at (her) crazy”, as in wanting to get into a physical altercation with her.

Our Opinion

Overall this is a cool effort by Iggy. Indeed she is one of the
few rappers in the game who is able to write an entire track on her
own.
