“Didn’t I” by OneRepublic

The question which makes up the title of this song (Didn’t I) is ultimately meant to point to the overall storyline featured in the lyrics.  And that is the singer reminiscing on a romance he was in which we can say unexpectedly ended. So in the chorus, he basically uses such questions to note that there was a time when he and his ex were in fact wholly committed to each other.

However, as alluded before, they decided to “say goodbye”, as in end the relationship. But more to the actually point is that even now, logically some time afterwards, he still has strong feelings for her. For example, he tends to see and hear her, even though she isn’t actually around. And in the second verse he remembers some joyous personal experiences they had together.

So overall, we can conclude that this is a love (romance) song. The addressee is the singer’s ex, someone whom the romance between the two of them has already concluded. However, that reality is not preventing him from still thinking about her affectionately.
