“Rescue Me” by OneRepublic

The premise of OneRepublic’s “Rescue Me” is the singer reminiscing on the good times he and his ex-girlfriend shared in their now-defunct romance. Indeed he very much desires to take things back to the old days when they “care(d) about each other” through reestablishing a romantic relationship with her. 

This becomes apparent not only by his persistent questioning of whether or not he can rely on her support. Or as he puts it, would she be there to “rescue” him if such was required? But also at the end of the second verse we see that he tells her to “call” him and not to “ever call another”, strongly implying that he wants to retain her as his shorty. 

However, these feelings do not come without their doubts. Yet at the end of the day, through repeated questioning of her present-day commitment to him and other things said throughout the track, it is beyond clear that he is still deeply in love with his ex-girlfriend. But what about his girlfriend? Does she feel the same way about him? The answer to this question isn’t made clear in the song.

• OneRepublic teased the release of this track on 13 May 2019 via Twitter.  It was officially released by their management on 17 May 2019.
• Brent Kutzle and Ryan Tedder, both of OneRepublic, wrote this track. They also produced the song along with record producer Tyler Spry.
• This is OneRepublic’s first fresh material to be released in 2019.
