“Easy Come Easy Go” by Imagine Dragons

The title of this song is a common colloquial expression that you’re probably already familiar with. And what it speaks to is that just as random as fortune, if you will, may come into our lives, it can also just as suddenly leave.

But Dan Reynolds and co. are not asserting such in a general sort of way. Rather he is relaying such within the context of interpersonal relationships, i.e. friendships. And even though the title/chorus features the vocalist coming to a nonchalant conclusion concerning the whole matter, the lyrics overall reveal that such is not the case.

Instead, as illustrated in the second verse, he has come to realize that he’s moving “a little too fast” for his own good. And this is specifically as far as maintaining friendships go.

Now in the pre-chorus and especially within the bridge, it becomes pretty obvious that Dan is making these statements in regards to a specific addressee. Said individual, as the lyrics by and large reveal, was someone he attended high school with. This was a close friend who, unfortunately, was unable to regularly attend school due to being stricken with “cancer of the bone”.

The passage further goes on to imply that it was in fact this person in particular who compelled Reynolds to put this piece together. And this is a fact that Reynolds verified when explaining “Easy Come Easy Go”. According to him, he even called said friend over, after ‘not talking to him in years’, specifically to play him this song.

Underlying Premises of “Easy Come Easy Go”

So at the end of the day, one of the underlying premises of this narrative is that the primary reason the vocalist has grown excommunicated from his friends may be due to the nature of his career. And this is thanks to the fact that he is an A list musician who is constantly busy.

But that noted, even though he is able to acknowledge that losing contact with loved ones is “just the way it goes” sometimes, it’s also obvious that this fact of life is disturbing him, especially in regards to his relationship with the aforenoted bestie.

Was the name “Easy come easy go” a reference to Queen in their song Bohemian Rhapsody the lyric, “I’m easy come easy go.”?
