“Escape from BABYLON” by SuicideboyS

There’s a lot being put forth in “Escape from BABYLON” which gives listeners a glimpse into Ruby and Scrim’s respective experiences with romance and the dispositions they have developed as a result. But the title alludes to one of the most referenced cities in the Bible, Babylon. And in the grand scheme of this track, there’s really no need to delve deeply into that. But most simply explained, it centers on a demonic entity who, when personified, is referred to as a female and is named “Babylon”, after the ancient city of the same name. And with that in mind, the implication would be that the Suicideboys also perceive romantic interests as such, i.e. evil ladies.

Ruby

The song does commence with such a feel. For instance, we find the term “dirty tramp” mentioned in the intro. And in the first verse, Ruby da Cherry (under the alias Romeo da Black Rose) refers to the woman he’s speaking about as “b*-ch” and not in that general-colloquialism kind of way. And what he is putting forth is the notion that if he starts to dislike a romantic interest, he has no qualms about cutting her off.

But that said, Ruby also depicts himself as a sucker for love so to speak, someone who can’t help but to pursue “a bad b*-ch”, i.e. an attractive woman with a ‘thick ass’, even though he knows at the end of the day the relationship will be all means fail.

Scrim

However what Scrim, under the moniker Yung Heath Ledger, is relaying is something totally different. Yes, he has also been involved in his own fair share of failed and even traumatizing romances.  But now he has a lady in his life who, unexpectedly, he’s actually developed a meaningful, loving and edifying relationship with. So his gripe isn’t with his current situation but rather the fact that past romance-related “trauma” still haunts him.

“Escape from BABYLON”

So to reiterate, the title and cover art of this song is ultimately a misdirection. The title, i.e. the phrase ‘escape from Babylon’, originated from the biblical books of Jeremiah and Revelations, and the cover art was also inspired by Revelations. But instead, what we are met with lyrically is a couple of dudes chiming in on their love lives. Moreover, the word “Babylon” is not present in the lyrics. But apparently what it is meant to point to, in context, is a less-than-ideal, disagreeable female romantic interest.
