“Fredo Joint” by Conway the Machine

First off in attempting to understand the title of this song (“Fredo Joint”), it can very well be a reference to Fredo Corleone, one of the characters from the classic gangster series, “The Godfather“. This is just an educated guess considering that criminal activity is also one of the main themes of “Fredo Joint” itself. For instance, Conway the Machine depicts himself as a well-to-do hustler who is apparently engaged in some illicit activities, such as selling drugs. Moreover he lets it be known that he lives by the gat and even has intentions of gunning down the dudes who killed his homey.

Another primary theme of this track would be the artist’s depression.  Conway depicts himself as an individual who deals with a considerable amount of “stress”. And said mental issues sometimes lend to the Machine having a generally-negative attitude. But that being said, he is obviously doing pretty good for himself economically. And at the end of the day it isn’t Conway’s depression that stands out but rather his commitment to living a street life, even in light his rising status.

And who is this friend of Conway who got murdered?

It may be his cousin, some dude named Chine Gun who he mentions earlier in the song. But the connection isn’t clear, and that’s why we didn’t expound on it.
