The Lyrics of “Hostage”

The lyrics of this song revolve around the vocalist waging a war against ‘his demons’. Whether he’s talking about literal demons, if you will, or using that designation to allude to his own mental-health issues is a matter of interpretation.

But in any event, it can be deemed that something internal, of the mental and/or spiritual variety, is stifling the narrator. The torture is so intense that he’s convinced he may even die as a result.

All lyrics considered, since we have come across numerous songs in the past based on a similar motif, David is most likely referring to a phenomenon such as being plagued with unavoidable self-destructive thoughts. And to note, in the first verse he does seem to allude to some of these ideas originating from an outside source.
