Chelsea Grin’s “Sing to the Grave” Meaning

As explained by Stephen Rutishauser, the most realistic way of interpreting “Sing to the Grave” is as the addressee being a deceased loved one, and the vocalist being such that he cannot accept that this person has passed away.

Of course dealing with the death of someone you cherish can be a very difficult experience. But being unable to mentally proceed forward without the deceased can prove unhealthy psychologically. And so it seems with the narrator of “Sing to the Grave”, someone who Stephen has described as being sort of a Dr. Frankenstein.

That is to say that we see in the chorus that the vocalist is intending to “put” the addressee “back together”, and in doing so, as envisioned the latter “will live forever”. But once again going back to the more-realistic implications of what’s being put forth, as expressed in the bridge, once again it’s as if the vocalist cannot come to grips with this person’s passing.

So conclusively, he does continue under the apparent belief that somehow he will be able to resurrect the addressee. But concurrently, it’s as if as the song progresses, the singer also gradually comes to the realization that now his loved one is “free” and that the best he can do personally is come to accept that he or she is no longer around.

“Put you back together
You will live forever
Put you back together
You will live forever”

Stephen Rutishauser talks about “Sing to the Grave”

According to Stephen, this is a song that is very close the band’s heart. And why? This is because during the recording process, a number of people that were very close to the band died. Stephen further stated that the song has the “macabre” theme on wishing you had the power to bring back to life a loved one who has passed away.

According to him, you are basically singing to the grave and hoping your deceased love one would emerge from the grave alive.
