“I Don’t Want It” by Hopsin

Hopsin’s “I Don’t Want It” can perhaps be defined as emo rap in its highest form. Hopsin is using this track as a direct medium to explain to his “fans” what’s going on in his personal life. Or more specifically, the rapper presents himself as someone who is suffering from harrowing depression and as a result is taking a break from the rap game to deal with these pressing issues.

Indeed at the beginning of the song, he compares himself to the late actor Robin Williams, who surprisingly took his own life in 2014. And what Hopsin is saying is tantamount to him also being successful yet suicidal, just as Williams was.

And these feelings apparently have their genesis dating as far back as his childhood, with Hopsin being the son of an absentee father and a mother who was too busy for him to really bond with. Since then, by accepting a never-say-die attitude, he has risen to become a successful rapper. And he had a strong crew by his side, whom he eventually got into a beef with and parted ways with. Moreover as a result of his success, he acquired a bunch of new friends who were either moochers or haters. Then he got his girlfriend, whom he wasn’t “on good terms with at the time”, pregnant. Indeed it would appear that due to their constant disagreements the two of them have broken up.

So right now he finds himself in a situation where he has no true friends or family around while simultaneously trying to ‘build up’ his independent record label. And the stress of all of these factors combined has him feeling as if he “can’t… breathe”. In other words, the depression is killing him. And as a result he doesn’t “want it no more”. He is therefore taking a break for a while.

What does Hopsin want no more?

What the titular “it” actually is isn’t specified per se. It can be any of the aforementioned elements, all of them combined, or perhaps he is referring to his rap career in particular.

That said, it is quite a shame things have become so hard for the rapper. Indeed issues such as coming from a dysfunctional family, dealing with “leeches” and having beef with your baby’s mother is more or less standard hip-hop fare. But Hopsin is taking things really-hard by referring to suicide and such. However, considering that he is known for airing out his personal issues, such heavy-hearted lyrics may actually be part of his overall marketing strategy considering that (emo)tional raps are what are trending these days.
