“I Will” by Matchbox Twenty

Matchbox Twenty’s “I Will” is heavily reliant on what we will classify as shrouded language. But there are a few aspects of the story being told which are seemingly discernible. First is that the addressee would obviously be someone who is suffering from some form of depression. And said depression apparently is sourced in something(s) which transpired in the past. Resultantly the singer seems to be offering himself as a source of inspiration to the this person.

And it is also arguable that such an idea is what the title of this song actually refers to. In other words, when this individual “don’t know” which way to go in life, the singer does and “will” guide him/her down the steady path. But again, this hypothesis is an attempt to understand a song which, from an analytical perspective, is frustratingly-ambiguous. Yet overall, the track seems to be based on those aforementioned concepts – the addressee being depressed, and the singer presenting himself as a constant source of emotional support.
