“No Other Love” by Matchbox Twenty (ft. Amanda Shires)

“No Other Love” was written by tenured songstress Deana Carter alongside Matchbox Twenty’s Paul Doucette, with the latter admitting that it actually “wasn’t intended for” the band. However, it was Gregg Wattenberg, the executive producer of the group’s album “Where the Light Goes”, who decided they should lay it down anyway.

And on this track – which, backed by Atlantic Records, was released on 26 May 2023 – Doucette gets co-production credit also.

Also interesting to note is that this song marks the only collaboration on the entirety of “Where the Light Goes”. The featured vocalist is Amanda Shires, a folk singer from Texas who won a couple of Grammy Awards back in 2018.

Lyrics of “No Other Love”

It appears that what the lyrics are getting at is the vocalists re-asserting their exclusive romantic commitment to each other. This is against the backdrop, as implied in the first verse and bridge, of their relationship currently being a troubled one.

So it’s as if amidst all of the drama, they have come to realize that it’s better to just squash it, because it’s not as if there’s another soulmate floating around out there, if you will. So the underlying message of this piece is sorta reminiscent of that of “Hang on Every Word“, as also found on “Where the Light Goes”, in that the vocalist(s) is reinforcing the notion that discontent in a serious romantic relationship doesn’t mean that it has to end.

“No other love is gonna shake me
No other love can break me
Tear me down or make me whole
No other heart is gonna thrill me
Hold me up or kill me
You know I don’t need no other love”

An Interesting Comment (:

“No Other Love” has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of my absolute favorites from Matchbox Twenty. It’s got that undeniable magic that just takes hold of you and refuses to let go. Picture this: the radio cranked up to the max, the windows rolled down, and me, driving around, enveloped in the sounds of this track. It’s an experience like no other. As the music fills the air, I find myself immersed in the sheer beauty of the scenery passing by. There’s something exhilarating about surrendering to the allure of the open road, the wind tousling my hair as I indulge in one guilty pleasure – chain smoking. It’s in these moments that I truly feel alive and connected to the world around me.

Rob Thomas’ voice on this song gives me chills. His voice is nothing short of an instrument of pure brilliance. The way he effortlessly pours his heart and soul into each word brings out emotions I didn’t even know I had. And that is simply awe-inspiring. There’s no denying his exceptional talent and the impact he brings to “No Other Love,” the “Where the Light Goes” album and the success of the band as a whole.

100% agreed! This new album is pure magic and even though all their new songs are brilliant, I can’t seem to play No Other Love on repeat. The feeling and emotions I get listening to this particular song is just pure! 11 out of 10 🙂
