Iggy Pop’s “Comments” Lyrics Meaning

Based on Iggy Pop’s explanation of “Comments”, this piece was in fact inspired by his interactions with social media. The fact that Iggy, as of its song’s release, has nearly 600,000 followers on Instagram belies his true popularity, as he’s been a bona fide music star for at least 40 years now.

In other words, he’s someone whom people out there are familiar with. But he has noted that when it comes to criticisms he receives on social media, said responses tend to be either hot or cold. Commenters either show him mad love or conversely, mad hate. So the second verse in particular reveals that Iggy’s own response to this phenomenon has been the development of an emotional coldness.

But overall, this song possesses what can be deemed an uplifting sentiment, at least from the perspective of the vocalist at hand. What’s being implied here is that he may have his issues with social media alright, but Iggy also realizes its easy-moneymaking potential. Or as he relays it, “sell(ing) your face to Hollywood” is a good thing.

It may seem strange to have someone like Iggy Pop espousing what reads like giving yourself over to the surveilling and exploitative powers that be. But going back to his explanation of this track, what he’s speaking to more specifically is the concept of being able to make a lot of money for doing little in return. So apparently, he perceives the likes of social media stars as falling into that category.
