“Morning Show” by Iggy Pop

The term “morning show”, as Iggy utilizes it, is metaphorical and furthermore symbolic of a concept like having to go out and facing the world every day. What’s being inferred is that at times, the vocalist may not feel like doing so. Or more to the point is Iggy apparently feeling compelled – like most people perhaps we can say – to put on a happy or peaceful face when interacting with others. But it can also be ascertained that he ain’t really on it like that.

Reading in-between the lines, what’s being put forth here is that Iggy may be under the same type of above-noted pressure, if you will, as the rest of us. But at the same time, he’s the type of person who’s also committed to keeping it real.

So if you catch Pop “do(ing) the morning show” with a smile on his face, it should be understood that he is behaving so for political purposes and not to be mistaken for him being genuinely happy. That is to say Iggy has mastered the art of concealing his inner pain.

According to Iggy, the song is basically about putting on a happy face despite being “down and depressed” on the inside. He compared the song to Smokey Robinson’s 1960’s song “Tears of a Clown”.

Release and Credits for “Morning Show”

“Morning Show” shared the same release date as its album, “Every Loser”. Both hit stores on the 6th of January, 2023. FYI, “Every Loser” served as the nineteenth studio album of Iggy’s career.

Iggy co-wrote this track alongside record producer, Andrew Watt (who also proceeded to produce it). Aside working with Iggy, other famous names that Watt has collaborated with include Justin Bieber, Ozzy Osborne and Pearl Jam.

Watt produced “Every Loser”.

Fun Fact

It was actually Watt’s idea for Pop to do a ballad, which Pop agreed to. Pop then approached the track like a country singer would.

And I’m sure we can all agree that Pop has perfectly encapsulated how it feels when one’s trying their best to put on a good face for the world even when going tough times.
