James Blunt’s “1973” Lyrics Meaning

“1973” has been dubbed a celebratory song set in a Ibiza. Ibiza is a Spanish island, located in the Mediterranean, which is largely known for its party culture. And this is the locale which James Blunt decided to settle in after he blew up as an artist.

More specifically, there is a popular club on the island called Pacha. And him reminiscing on pleasurable memories from that setting is definitely a factor in this song. Indeed the title of the track is actually a reference to the year in which Pacha was founded. But that being established, there is also a sentiment of disappointment and arguably even a broken heart also being relayed in the lyrics.

Who is Simona?

The above brings us to the song’s addressee, a woman named “Simona”. It has been said that this is a lady whom James had actually met inside of Pacha and apparently got romantically involved with. But to say that he’s actually reminiscing on good times with her is debatable. For instance, from the onset he states that she is “getting older” and that her “journey’s been etched on” her skin, and generally speaking these do not appear to be compliments. He then goes on to basically allude to the idea that whereas he was once feeling her, now that passion has passed.

Indeed as the track progresses, it plays out like a breakup song. Or stated differently, the narrator is ‘sobering’ up now and in doing so has come to realize that this relationship isn’t best for him. Basically, the feelings which kept he and Simona together are apparently no longer present.

Now with that being the reality of the situation, he is telling this lady that despite the two of them going their separate ways, he will always remember the special moments they had “in the club… in 1973”, with “1973” once again pointing back to Pacha. So that’s where the celebratory aspect comes in.  That is even though the singer and Simona are breaking up, he is not leaving her with any ill will.  Rather the love they did share within the context of Pacha – even if it was a temporal one conducted under the influence of a party atmosphere – will always remain close to his heart.

Wow James, too nostalgic mate for a 65 year old romance addict to not get choked over. I loved 2 Simonas, one from Alaska when I was again single in Seattle in 86. I was overwhelmed by her beauty. The earlier one was a true story of lost love in Wotton and Bath in 75. I call her Simona now cos we went to night clubs in 75 and the song almost fits. We were both 19 and I was too shy to tell her I wanted a future. She broke my heart because I was shy. If I’d been 24 I’d have proposed but God had a different plan. If you are still there A-M B, I treasure the memory and sometimes wish I had a time machine…But always God has a plan we cannot fathom yet perfect..

This song takes me back to late teens when I loved so much, and then that love slowly grew cold . I loved, turned away, or she did, but, the memories were always special.

A great pop-nostalgia song, with credit to the drummer for keeping things moving along propulsively.

Too many references to Carly Simon(a), Here we go again, I can see clearly, to be a coincidence.
