Meaning of “Beside You” by James Blunt

The simplest way of understanding the thesis sentiment behind James Blunt’s “Beside You” is as it revolving around the vocalist’s desire for his romance to last. In expressing that longing, James in part relies on religious terminology, praying for the good fortune of the union, in a manner of speaking.

This is a love song though one that is imbued, in sort of an unorthodox way, with religious terminology.  When Blunt puts forth that he “hope(s) there’s a song that God only knows, and it’s keeping me dancing beside you”, even though that’s a somewhat of a convoluted or confusing statement, we will take that to mean that he’s looking forward to his romance with the addressee being blessed from on high. And as implied, that blessing will not only keep the relationship lasting but also edifying.

“I hope there’s a song that God only knows
And it’s keeping me dancing
Nobody here knows how the melody goes
But it’s keeping me dancing beside you”

James himself has described this song as one that is “a bit of a celebration”. He went on to describe it as being about finally enjoying the blessing of being with the person who you searched all your life for.
