“Lost” by Goo Goo Dolls

This song by Goo Goo Dolls is centered on a female character who is “lost”.  This is not in a literal sense but rather alludes to the general idea of she living an unedifying life. Basically we can that the path her life has taken is not fulfilling. By virtue of this, the singer, who is a person that is obviously close to her, is trying to encourage her to live a little, so to speak. And in that regards, he specifically refers to her opening up her heart to happiness. This notion is illustrated via the metaphor “sail away to the sun”.

And in terms of her being “lost” (i.e. depressed), he is telling her that she shouldn’t beat herself up about it, as “we all get lost sometimes”.

Moreover it is implied that he is making these assertions based on her own inner urges to set forth in search of true, internal gratification.

Primary Sentiment of “Lost”

According to band member John Rzeznik, the underlying sentiment of this tune is that people sometimes get caught up in the with the glittering, showy aspects of the world around us which are false depictions of happiness. And rather what we should be focused on is “what really matters”

So at the end of the day, the band takes a philosophical approach with this tune. And what they are preaching is that people need to sometimes step away from their own personal pursuits and “take a chance” that somewhere out there lies true love waiting for them.
