Meaning of “Return to Innocence” by Enigma

“Return to Innocence” is very philosophical in nature, as for example it was directly inspired by a couple of genuine Asian folk musicians. And as can be gleaned from the title, what the lyrics espouse is a “return to innocence”.

In the eyes of the vocalist, that would entail adhering to a modus operandi which revolves around acknowledging personal vulnerability while simultaneously not being afraid to show strength.

And whereas that may sound confusing, the singer does sorta clarify in the second verse that a person shouldn’t be afraid to show their emotions, whether they reflect joy or sorrow. Or as Angel X more plainly puts it, “be yourself, don’t hide”. At the end of the day, what he means, more simply put, is that a person should be true to themselves while concurrently remaining faithful instead of being afraid to pursue “destiny”.

Practically adopting this outlook on life, according to this song, would result in a “return to yourself” and “the return to innocence”.

“Love, love, devotion, devotion
Feeling, feeling, emotion, emotion
Don’t be afraid to be weak
Don’t be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart, my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence”
