“Mr. Officer” by Tee Grizzley (ft. Queen Naija)

“Mr. Officer” is one of many songs we can expect to hear in the near future addressing the issue of injustice against African-Americans. Said subject is the hot topic of the day due to recent killing of one such individual, George Floyd, at the hands of law enforcement and the subsequent mass protests which are still going on as of the release of this track.

On “Mr. Officer”, Tee Grizzley, buttressed by Queen Naija, brings his own unique spin to the equation. And the track is based on two primary sentiments. First is that the artists are empathizing with the victims of injustice and police brutality like George Floyd. And they go about doing so by tasking the listener to imaging if one such individual was actually someone – like an uncle, father or brother – that they loved.

“Mister Officer
Y’all are killin’ us”

And second, Grizzley reminds officers that their job is indeed to “protect and serve”. So killing the selfsame people whom they have sworn to defend is a fundamental and blatant contradiction of this oath. Thus it is clear that Tee has issues with the system.  But he is not taking a confrontational stance in confronting the matter at hand. Rather he is more or less calling on the police to behave in a more-civil manner.
