“My Girl” by Oskar Cyms

“My Girl” is written and rendered by Polish artists, who presumably did not grow up with English being their first language. That may explain why parts of the song seems to have continuity issues. That is to say that Oskar presents the featured romance, on one hand, as one that may have already dissolved, and he is now trying to reignite. But on the other, it sounds like he is just now getting with the addressee, the apple of his eye.

All lyrics of “My Girl” considered, it appears that the narrative is more along the lines of the latter, i.e. this being a budding romance. Maybe what the vocalist is saying in the second verse for instance is that he and the addressee being “hurt” in the “past” was something they went through individually, not as couple. But in the chorus he does state that he ‘misses’ her as he ‘dances in the dark’, implying that they have already built up some type of meaningful, and may we say romantic relationship that has fallen apart.

And for whatever reason, as it currently stands, the vocalist doesn’t seem overly confident in his decision to love the addressee, thinking that he may be making “a fool” out of himself in the process. But that said, the thesis sentiment revolves around Oskar apparently celebrating the fact that he has indeed locked the addressee down or made her ‘his girl’, as stated.

This song was written by Dominic Buczkowski-Wojtaszek (in conjunction with lyricist Patryk Kumór), the primary musician behind the soundtrack to the 2022 Polish thriller, “365 Days: This Day“.

“My Girl” was produced by another Polish act, a music duo that goes by the tag of Hotel Torino.

Said film, which was aired by Netflix in 2022, is based on a novel by a Polish author named Blanka Lipińska. Accordingly, the movie itself was issued in both Polish and English. It would appear that most of the musicians involved in its soundtrack, such as Oskar Cyms with “My Girl”, are from Poland.

That said, there really doesn’t seem to be much verifiable information about Oskar Cyms readily available online as of the writing of this post, just a few days after the release of “My Girl”. What is known though is that he has a notable social-media following, being one of those singers who traces his come-up to covering songs by more popular artists. Also, by the looks of things he is pretty well-known in his part of the world, and this track appears to be the first official single that Cyms has ever dropped.
