Meaning of “Percheron Mules” by Tyler Childers

Believe or not, “Percheron Mules”, which was dropped as recently as 8 September 2023 with the backing of at least one major label (RCA Records), is actually an ode to a particular breed of work mules.

As argued by Tyler Childers, they are actually preferable to automobiles, at least for the type of outback lifestyle that he favors. For instance, mules do not need oil and gasoline in order to operate. That is to say that as implied, taking care of them not only requires less maintenance than cars but also less money.

Furthermore, even as far as their exhaust goes, if you will, Tyler actually needs it for composting. So the main point being relayed is that they are actually more ideal than any machine for the type of tasks he has in mind, i.e. those of the rural/agricultural variety.

“Mammoth Jacks and Percheron mares
Grazin’ up and down my dreams
Nothin’ less than sixteen hands
I don’t wanna drag my feet
Anythin’ more small than that
It ain’t worth the feed it takes
Give me big ‘ol Mammoth Jacks
Throwin’ mules the size of tanks”

Besides RCA, the other label that supported the release of this track is Hickman Holler Records, which was apparently founded by Tyler Childers himself.

Tyler Childers penned “Percheron Mules”, and he produced it with his regular collaborators, The Food Stamps.

This song is derived from the playlist of Tyler Childers’ 2023 project “Rustin’ in the Rain”. And to note, the cover art of said album is highlighted by the singer standing next to what appears to be a Percheron mule.
