“Pop Trunk” by Ameer Vann

The title of this song (“Pop Trunk”) appears as if it may very well be a double entendre. On the surface it appears to be a shoutout to a particular disc jockey named DJ Screw (1971-2000) who was a trendsetter in Ameer’s hometown of Houston, Texas. Screw dropped a project a few years back entitled “Pop Trunk” which Vann obviously gives a shoutout to, particularly in regard to parking outside of the addressee’s residence and playing it really loud.

And that brings us to the underlying theme of this song, as in it being diss track, i.e. one where the lyricist is to some degree addressing rivals. This is made most obvious in the outro where he references some dudes wanting to murder him.

But Ameer is “Southside raised”, as in being prepared to defend himself since he’s from the mean streets of Houston. Indeed the prevailing understanding of the colloquial phrase ‘pop the trunk’ points to an individual pulling a gun out of the trunk of his car. And whereas there are other topics discussed in the track, including the artist’s mental depression and him giving a shoutout to his mother and grandmother, such a hard stance is ultimately the prevailing sentiment expressed. That is to say that, succinctly put, Ameer Vann presents himself as a real street gangster. And as such he is ever-ready for attacks from opps, in addition to not being afraid to shine in the meantime.

Release Date of “Pop Trunk”

FYI, “Emmanuel” is the first project Ameer has dropped since being unceremoniously booted out of Brockhampton a little over a year ago.

In fact he even throws a jab at the ‘boy band’ during the first verse of “Pop Trunk”. This is arguably one of the highlights of the “Pop Trunk”.

Lyrics of "Pop Trunk"

The line above is believed to be in response to a verse in Brockhampton’s “Dearly Departed” in which Ameer was criticized.
