“Catastrophist” by Trivium

Trivium’s “Catastrophist” is a very-complex song lyrically. But what seems to be going down is that the addressee would be akin to the leaders of society or the powers-that-be. And the vocalist seems to be accusing them, in the least, of mentally poisoning the masses. But this is not to imply that he is putting all of the blame on them. Indeed in the first verse he states that we, as in the people, need to be ‘saved from ourselves’, as we are caught in a ‘vicious cycle’ of consumption. So perhaps this tune can be criticizing popular American practices such as consumerism.

But all things considered, what the vocalist is alluding to seems to be a much-grander idea than that, a notion akin to a society being led down the path of self-destruction. And the appetites of its citizens are blinding them as to what’s actually going on.

So with that being said, apparently the titular “catastrophist” would be those parties who are actually feeding these appetites, i.e. the leaders of the society. So this track is quite-scathing indeed. And it harps on a subject which is a bit popular in heavy metal – that of Americans, if you will, being caught up in a lifestyle which is not conducive to their overall well-being.
